~ Carl Sagan

Day 1 - IVY Mars Interplanetary Impact:

Join an inspiring group of IVY Members as we get our hands dirty for an IVY Volunteer Experience | Community Garden Day at the dazzling Hale Crater! Ever since naturally flowing water was discovered along the slopes of the crater, we’ve been working on growing our very own IVY Mars Community Gardens to cultivate the Red Planet’s soil into rich land.

We’ll start the day off with some fun planting and weeding, learning the best ways to tend to our own gardens from our horticultural expert, and celebrate our hard work with complimentary cocktails and space snacks. This is sure to be an invigorating day of hard work and lively company.

Get ready for an unforgettable IVY Sunset Hike & Champagne Toast on the slopes of the largest volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons. Three times taller than earth’s Everest, yet as widespread as the state of Arizona, Olympus Mons offers a dazzling stretch of gently sloping red rock trails, perfect for hikers of all experience levels.

We’ll board the IVY Mars Rover for icebreakers and delicious complimentary welcome drinks as we drive up to just a few short miles away from the epic caldera. Then, thanks to Mars’ luxuriously long sunsets which can last up to two hours, we’ll take a leisurely trek to the rim, taking in the views and toasting with champagne imported specially from Earth.

Unravel mankind’s long-lived infatuation with the Red Planet, popularly referred to as “Mars Fever,” during this IVY Mars Culture Night. Since the 19th century, our culture has been populated with a fascinating range of representations of the “Intelligent Martian,” an extraterrestrial creature at times trying to communicate with, invade, or living peacefully with our planet.

From H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds to the Looney Tunes’ Marvin the Martian, the depictions of Martians are wide-ranging and complex. This mind-expanding conversation about the representation of Martians in popular culture will engage with a question that delves deep into the human psyche and soul: how likely is it that intelligent life exists elsewhere in our Solar System?

Engage in a fascinating discussion about the presence of water on Mars and what it means for the evolution of all planets. Currently, Mars’ atmosphere does not allow liquid water to exist at the surface for long — yet this same surface is marked with channels and floodplains that hint at one of the largest known floods in the solar system occurring some 3.5 billion years ago.

What is the source of this ancient floodwater? How long did it last on the surface of Mars? And where did it go? The answers may lie deep beneath Mars's red soil, and the questions hold clues about the the potential for life elsewhere in the universe. Before and after the talk, we’ll enjoy complimentary zero-gravity cocktails and inspiring conversation with a great group of IVY Members.
